Biography

Dr. Janis Brody earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of California at Berkeley, and graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Columbia College, Columbia University. Dr. Brody’s informative and entertaining book Your Body: The Girls’ Guide (St. Martin’s Press, September 2000) has been recommended by the media (e.g., Publishers Weekly, Amazon.com’s Top Ten Parenting and Families List), and within three months after its publication, had already sold over 19,000 copies. She is also author of Bringing Home the Laundry: Effective Parenting for College and Beyond (Taylor Publishing, December 2000), which is based on her research into how to strengthen parent-child relationships when college begins.

Dr. Brody was co-executive producer, co-creator, co-writer and educational consultant for the TV pilot The Flux Report, a puberty news and sex education sketch comedy series for ‘tweens that was in development with Nickelodeon/MTV Networks. She currently consults with the network on reaching teens on issues of sexuality. Dr. Brody continues to develop television shows for children and teens.

Dr. Brody has over six years of clinical experience working with children/adolescents and their parents in schools, hospitals, and community clinics. She’s worked as a school psychologist, a consultant to elementary school teachers, a therapeutic pre-school instructor, and has conducted educational/IQ testing with children. During her six years specialization in child and adolescent research, Dr. Brody designed, implemented, and evaluated three major studies. She’s assessed program effectiveness from both a community psychologist’s and a market researcher’s perspective (Sachs Communications Group). She originated and led a two-year interdisciplinary collaboration among Berkeley City leaders from mental health, education, juvenile justice, and the mayor’s office; the goal was to prevent runaway youth from becoming homeless. In response to the recent World Trade Center terrorist attacks, Dr. Brody, in collaboration with Help USA, co-founded and co-directed a drop-in crisis-counseling center in downtown Manhattan.

Dr. Brody has been a college instructor at the University of California at Berkeley, a public speaker at national conferences (e.g., American Psychological Association), and has appeared on radio and television (FOX News). She’s been quoted as a psychological expert in parenting (e.g., Parents) and teen (e.g., CosmoGIRL!) magazines, as well as newspaper articles (e.g., Associated Press). For leisure, Dr. Brody paints, designs jewelry, and still does what she’s loved to do since junior high school—funk/hip-hop dancing on roller-skates, which she indulges in every weekend in New York’s City’s Central Park.
